With a tip of the hat to the bees that provide us with this incredible ingredient, here are just a few of the ways in which honey can be used as a potent natural remedy.

Wound salve

Many studies have found honey to be effective in treating wounds. In one study, a therapeutic honey and Norwegian forest honey were found to kill all strains of bacteria in wounds. And other studies confirm that honey promotes healing and in some cases, gets rid of and prevents infection when other treatments fail. WebMD advises applying honey directly to the wound or to the dressing. When used directly, apply 15 to 30 milliliters (3 to 6 teaspoons) to the wound, then cover with sterile gauze and bandages or a polyurethane dressing; change the dressing every 12 to 48 hours. (Note: In general, the darker the honey, the stronger its antibacterial and antioxidant power.)

Dandruff treatment

Honey to fix dandruff? At least one study agrees. Patients with chronic seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff were given topical treatments of honey; for all of the patients, itching was relieved and scaling disappeared within one week. Skin lesions were completely healed within two weeks, and patients showed subjective improvement in hair loss as well.

Try this at home: Mix 90 percent honey with 10 percent warm water and rub into the scalp for a few minutes. Cover with a shower cap and leave on for three hours, then rinse. Do this every other day for four weeks, after which the treatment can be done once a week to prevent relapse.

Cough suppressant

There’s a reason so many cough medicines are flavored with honey — it’s a great natural cough tamer. One study found that buckwheat honey outperformed the cough suppressant dextromethorphan (DM) in combating nighttime coughs in kids. In another study, researchers gave children with colds 2 teaspoons of honey 30 minutes before bed – they coughed less frequently and less severely when compared to those who didn’t get honey. You can take honey straight to treat a cough, using between 1/2 teaspoon and 2 teaspoons, or you can make a cough syrup like this one, created by Nurse Barb for the National Honey Board:

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon zest
  • 1/4 cup sliced ginger.
  • 1 cup water.
  • 1 cup honey.
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice.

Add all ingredients except honey to a small pan, bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Strain into a heat-proof vessel. Heat honey on low, making sure it doesn’t boil, and then stir it into the other mixture. Pour into a clean jar and seal. This mixture can be refrigerated for up to two months.

  • For children 1 to 5 years: 1/2 to 1 teaspoon every two hours
  • For children 5 to 12 years: 1-2 teaspoon every two hours.
  • For children 12 and older and adults: 1 to 2 tablespoons every 4 hours.

Eyelash balm

A honey-based makeup remover is a treat for eyelashes.

Because eyelashes need love too! But this formula (also from the National Honey Board) plays double-duty as an effective (not to mention affordable and natural) eye makeup remover as well.

1 teaspoon honey
3 teaspoons castor oil

Mix honey and castor oil in a sterilized, small bowl or jar and cover. Let it sit in a cool place for a week, stirring occasionally, until it reaches a smooth, homogenous consistency. Use nightly to remove makeup and make your lashes lush.

Burn treatment

In a number of studies, scientists have found that honey’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties may promote healing of small burns; and in fact, nonserious burns healed faster when treated with gauze and honey, on average, than those treated with antibiotic creams and other dressings. A paper published by the National Institutes of Health notes why honey is so effective for this – namely, because of its antibacterial action, low pH, high viscosity, hygroscopic effect, and hydrogen peroxide content. For treatment, you can follow the same instructions as those listed for wound healing above. (And of course, serious burns should be seen by a medical professional.)

Sunburn remedy

Applying honey straight to sunburned skin to promote cooling, soothing and faster healing. To hasten rehydration, try this formula:

1 teaspoon honey
1 teaspoon olive oil
1/4 teaspoon lemon juice

Combine the ingredients and apply to sunburned skin; leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing with tepid water.

Blood booster

According to the Mayo Clinic, honey may hold promise as way to prevent low white blood cell count caused by chemotherapy. In one trial, 40 percent of cancer patients who were at risk of neutropenia (very low levels of a specific white blood cell) had no further episodes of the condition after taking 2 teaspoons of honey daily during chemotherapy.

Face food

Honey and aloe are the perfect allies for your skin.
Honey’s properties make it especially agreeable for the skin; this method will feed your face with a one-two punch of soothing aloe and healing honey. Take an aloe vera leaf and slice it open, then spread honey on the surface. Gently rub the honey side on your face for a few minutes, spreading the aloe-honey mixture evenly. Leave on for 15 minutes and then rinse with cool water.

Dry hair treatment

Honey’s humectant qualities make it a great match for treating dry hair. This formula from Sue Bee Honey will condition even the driest of locks.

1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup olive oil (for normal to oily hair, use only 2 tablespoons oil)

Mix together oil and honey and gently work through hair. Cover with a shower cap and leave on for 30 minutes. Rinse, shampoo and style as usual..

Allergy fighter

The scientific jury is still out on this one, but the premise is that by consuming local honey (which naturally includes small amounts of local pollen) you can build up your immunity to seasonal allergens. A few studies have concluded that this claim has little merit, but many holistic enthusiasts heartily disagree. Either way, dosage recommendations include consuming 2 teaspoons of honey daily – and to do so with patience, proponents say it can take up to six weeks to start working.

Apple Cider Vinegar

5 Reasons You Need Apple Cider Vinegar
If we had a dollar for every time a “folk remedy” has been proven—scientifically—to work? Well, let’s just say a lot more people would have probably heard of the Institute for Natural Healing by now. Take apple cider vinegar—or ACV—for example. People have been using it for medicinal purposes for literally thousands of years. Your grandmother probably swore by it. Yet you may not even realize just how potent a weapon it could be in keeping you young and healthy.

But take a look at just a few of its important benefits

It lowers cholesterol: Iranian researchers tested apple cider vinegar on rats with normal and diabetic lipid levels. After just four weeks, both groups were healthier. The rats with normal lipid levels showed a reduction in LDL cholesterol. And as LDL levels decreased, HDL—good cholesterol—levels increased. In the diabetic rats, researchers found lower fat levels in the blood. That leads to a decreased risk of heart disease. ACV also increased HDL cholesterol levels in the diabetic rats. Turkish researchers also studied the effects of this folk remedy. This time, they gave the rats oral supplements. Once again triglyceride levels decreased. And the rats on a high-cholesterol diet also had a decrease in LDL levels. Apple cider vinegar is simple, cost-effective, and safe. You can’t say the same about Lipitor..

2- It could help keep blood pressure down: Acetic acid is a main component of vinegar. And a recent study found that acetic acid helped lower the blood pressure of lab rats significantly. There’s also an antioxidant in apple cider vinegar called quercetin. In one study, this compound successfully lowered blood pressure. We hope to see more research on blood pressure and ACV. But evidence shows that it’s made up of nutrients that can help keep your BP levels healthy. Plus it has so many other benefits to boot….

3- It’s a natural diabetes fighter: A 2007 study found that taking two tablespoons before going to sleep helped lower glucose levels the next morning by as much as 6% in type 2 diabetics. Another study showed that drinking this vinegar before you eat actually slows down a blood sugar spike after a high carb meal. The study’s author said, “Vinegar appears to have effects similar to some of the most popular medications for diabetes… The acetic acid in vinegar may inhibit enzymes that digest starch so that carbohydrate molecules aren’t available for absorption…And it’s because of this carb-blocking power that there’s yet another benefit to this remedy you might like even better…” .

4- It helps you lose weight: According to legend, ancient Egyptians used apple cider vinegar as a weight loss solution. They were really onto something. You see, there was an unexpected side effect in the study we just mentioned. In addition to lowering their glucose, the participants lost between two and four pounds in a four—week period. Obviously, that’s not a huge amount. So ACV is by no means a magic bullet when it comes to weight loss. But it can help and should be part of your overall weight loss plan. Need more proof? Yet another study found that eating vinegar along with your food could help you feel fuller. Plus Japanese scientists found that acetic acid lowered BMI, body fat mass, and triglyceride levels in obese patients..

5- It makes you look better too! Beside the fact that it can help you lose weight, apple cider vinegar has many uses that can help you look your best. If you want shiny, healthy hair do an ACV rinse. Mix equal parts vinegar and water. Fighting eczema or acne? Dilute it with water and use it as a toner. It even helps to remove stains on your teeth. Just rub some on your teeth then rinse. Or you can gargle with it. Be sure to brush afterward though..

And these are just a handful of the health benefits of apple cider vinegar. It could help soothe your sore throat, combat allergies, ease arthritis, help with digestive issues…and so much more. But if you want real results from this folk remedy, there’s one important thing to keep in mind…

You must buy the raw, organic, unfiltered kind. Be sure to include the “mother” (that’s the cobwebby looking stuff at the bottom of the bottle) in any mixture you use. And, since it is highly acidic, make sure you always dilute ACV—especially if you are ingesting it. It could be harsh on your esophagus.

And it works in the house too

General cleaning: For clean toilets and a fresh-smelling bathroom, pour some ACV into your toilet and allow it to sit overnight. You can also use it in your dishwasher instead of detergent. Clean microwaves, windows, glasses, wood and tile floors and mirrors with a mixture of 1⁄2 cup apple cider vinegar and 1 cup water.

2- Unclog Drains: Commercial drain cleaners are dangerous and can cause stinging of the eyes, rashes, respiratory damage and other medical conditions. To avoid this, use a mixture of ACV and baking soda. This solution is not only better for your health, but also better for your pipes. To unclog drains, funnel 1⁄2 cup of baking soda into your drain and follow it with 1 cup of apple cider vinegar. After the foaming stops, flush the drain with hot water and wait five minutes. After this, flush with cold water. If you have a slow drain, you can pour in 1⁄2 cup of salt followed by 2 cups of boiling apple cider vinegar, then flush with hot water, followed by cold water. Do this monthly to keep your drains running smoothly.

3- Remove fridge odors: If you are hit with a knock-down odor every time you open your fridge, you may want to consider a good cleaning with an ACV and water mixture. Simply place equal amounts of each in a spray bottle and clean away. When you are finished, set a small, shallow cup of ACV in the fridge in a location where it won’t get knocked over. It will continue to freshen your fridge for up to a month.

4- To remove the white rings: left by wet glasses, mix equal parts of ACV and olive oil, and apply the mixture to your furniture with a soft cloth. Use another clean cloth for shining – being sure to go with the wood grain.

5- Fleas & Ticks: ACV is useful for treating fleas and ticks on pets. Adding one part apple cider vinegar to one part water and spraying the mixture on your pet will help keep the pesky critters at bay. Be sure to saturate the entire coat, and repeat a few times a week during heavy flea season.

6- Steer clear of commercial weed killers, as they contain dangerous chemicals. Try spraying undiluted ACV directly onto weeds to keep them under control. This works great between patio stones or along edging. .

7- Mildew remover: For mildew in and around the home, fill a 5 gallon bucket with warm water and add 2 cups of ACV. Mix the solution well and use a sponge to clean the area. .
